Ernő Flachbarth was born on March 3, 1896 in Gölnicbánya (Gelnica). He studied at the Faculty of Law of Pázmány Péter University Budapest, where he graduated in 1918. After his native town was detached to Chechoslovakia, he devoted his main activity to the law of national minorities. As first editor of ‘Hungarian Daily of Prague’ (Prágai Magyar Hírlap) and leading functionary of the Hungarian Social Organizations in a number of articles and studies he dealt with the legal situation of minorities in the framework of the post-war treaty law created under the aegis of the League of Nations. In 1939 he was qualified as privat-dozent at Pázmány Péter University. In the same year he was appointed to a professorship at the Tisza István University in Debrecen. He read lectures on international law and legal philosophy, and headed the Institute of Minority Law between 1939 and 1949. After the termination of the Debrecen Faculty of Law, he carried on teaching international law at the University of Pécs. He died there on December 12, 1955. Main work of Professor Flachbarth – System des internationalen Minderheitrechtes’ (Budapest, 1936) is an all-embracing synthesis of minority law of that time. In other studies he dealt with problems of theory of international law such as relation between international and state law self-determination of nations, responsibility of POWs for crimes under international law, history of sovereignty, etc… He was scientist and enthusiastic teacher at the same time. Professor of classic style, who’s activity all the time was characterised by the effort to integrate research work with education.
